Press Release: BP Global Choice
BP Global Choice - Drivers Deliver Greenhouse Gas Reduction June 18, 2001 The BP Global Choice program, which was launched on January 1, this year, offers to offset customer's car emissions when they buy BP Ultimate petrol. Under this initiative, a part of the purchase price paid by motorists who choose to use BP Ultimate is used for investment in a series of recognized and accredited emission abatement projects in areas of cleaner energy supply, reduced energy demand, agriculture and forestry and methane recovery and capture. Less than six months into the year, two projects are already underway. The first project involves capturing and converting methane emitted from a landfill site in WA into electricity. The second involves the conversion of coal and oil-fired boilers to natural gas at a rendering plant in NSW. Together, these projects will lead to a reduction of up to 40,000 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide emissions per annum. This has the greenhouse gas equivalent of taking 8,000 cars off the road a year. Mr Mike McGuinness, fuels manager, for BP said; 'BP Global Choice is a logical extension to BP's commitment to environmental protection and it is very satisfying to see the first tangible results of the program being delivered within six months of the scheme being launched.'
